UAlg is a Portuguese public university with administrative and financial autonomy founded in the late 1970s. Its two campuses and the central administration are located in Faro. It has about 9,000 students. The University of the Algarve is particularly well-known for its marine biology & fisheries and oceanography licenciatura degrees offered by its Marine and Environmental Sciences Faculty. UAlg awards licenciatura degrees (1st cycle undergraduate bachelor's degree); mestrado degrees (2nd cycle graduate masters' degree); and doutoramento degrees (3rd cycle graduate doctorate degree - only awarded by the university faculties) in several fields, ranging from economics to environmental engineering.
